The Boulton-Paul Defiant was the only "turret fighter" to enter service with the RAF.
The Defiant was based on the philosophy that a fighter armed only with a turret bristling with machine guns could penetrate a stream of bombers and wreak havoc, and that the turret also enabled it to defend itself against enemy fighters.
During its first few missions during the Battle of Britain in 1940, enemy pilots were caught off guard and the Defiant did well, but soon Luftwaffe pilots realised its weaknesses, particularly the lack of forward-firing weapons, and the Defiant was soon restricted to night fighting missions, where it performed better.
