One of the classic British combat aircraft of the First World War, the Pup was originally called the Sopwith Scout. However, because it was significantly smaller than its predecessor, the Sopwith 1½ Strutter, pilots almost immediately nicknamed it the "Pup."

Introduced into combat service in late 1916, the Pup was an excellent air fighter with incredible maneuverability. It enabled the Allies to enjoy a period of hard-fought air supremacy.

Although the single .303-inch Vickers machine gun was too light for modern air combat, nearly 1,800 of these tiny fighters were built.
