A characteristic feature of some of these vehicles was the combination of features from different production series. Thus, Tiger I tanks existed with hulls from early or mid-production runs, which were later equipped with steel road wheels during repairs or modifications. Many of these vehicles also still bore the Zimmerit coating, which was applied as standard between 1943 and September 1944. This resulted in very distinctive hybrid forms that differed from the regular production versions.
Typical identifying features of such Fehrmann Tigers included the textured Zimmerit coating, steel road wheels, different tool arrangements, and other, sometimes improvised, modifications and equipment details. These vehicles reflect the strained supply situation of the final months of the war, during which available equipment was kept operational regardless of its original production status.
The Tigers of the Fehrmann Group participated in the defensive battles in Northwest Germany in the spring of 1945 and are now among the most historically interesting examples of the late-stage improvisational solutions employed by the German armored forces.
