Three companies competed in the final phase: AM General, Chrysler Defense, and Teledyne Continental. AM General emerged as the winner, and the first production vehicle rolled off the assembly line on January 2, 1985.
The Humvee was built on a steel frame featuring a lightweight, corrosion-resistant aluminum body.
Its design positioned drivetrain components high within the chassis, resulting in a flat underbody and, consequently, improved off-road capability. The vehicle saw its first combat action in Panama in 1989 and gained worldwide recognition for its reliability under adverse conditions during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
Operational experience later revealed the vulnerability of unarmored vehicles to small-arms fire in urban environments, leading to the development of armored variants.
The M1025A2 is an armored weapon carrier from the HMMWV family's A2 upgrade series, designed for improved mobility, reliability, and ease of field maintenance. It is characterized by a sloped rear section and a roof-mounted weapon station.
Protection is provided by a basic armor package combining steel, Kevlar, and polycarbonate glass.
The vehicle serves as a mobile platform for the M2HB heavy machine gun, the Mk19 grenade launcher, and the TOW anti-tank guided missile; it is deployed for patrols, convoy escort, reconnaissance missions, and military police duties.
