In 1942, following a major refit, HMS Renown was considerably modernized with improved anti-aircraft equipment, radar, and armor, as well as updated fire control systems. During this period, she was primarily deployed in convoy and escort duties, as well as strategic fleet deployments, since fast battleships were urgently needed to secure vital supply routes in World War II.
At the beginning of 1942, she operated for a time as part of the British Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean, where she was used to protect against potential Japanese advances. She also played a role in securing sea lanes between the Middle East, Africa, and the Indian Ocean. Her speed and heavy armament made her particularly well-suited to serve both as a deterrent and as an escort for carrier and convoy forces.
Despite her age, HMS Renown remained one of the most capable British battleships of the era thanks to modernizations. She combined classic battlecruiser characteristics—high speed and powerful main armament—with modern radar and anti-aircraft technology, thus remaining operationally valuable well into the war.
