The 15 cm sFH 13/1 (Sf) auf Gw Lorraine Schlepper (f) Sd.Kfz. 135/1 was a German self-propelled artillery vehicle from World War II, based on the captured French Lorraine 37L.
Following the 1940 campaign in France, the Wehrmacht possessed large stocks of these reliable tracked tractors and had a portion of them converted into armored artillery vehicles. This involved removing the Lorraine's superstructure and installing an open fighting compartment equipped with the 15 cm sFH 13/1 heavy field howitzer. The designation "(Sf)" stands for *Selbstfahrlafette* (self-propelled mount), while "(f)" indicates the French origin of the chassis.
The 15 cm howitzer fired heavy high-explosive shells that were highly effective against field fortifications, infantry positions, and other area targets. However, the vehicle featured only light armor and an open top, offering the crew protection primarily against small-arms fire and shrapnel. Its mobility was good for the time, allowing the heavy artillery to be redeployed much faster than a towed howitzer.
From 1942 onwards, the Sd.Kfz. 135/1 saw service primarily within the artillery battalions of Panzer divisions. The vehicles became particularly well-known in North Africa, where they served with units such as the 21st Panzer Division. There, they proved effective as mobile fire support, though they suffered from their open-topped design and limited armor.
Overall, relatively few of these vehicles were produced, which is why the Sd.Kfz. 135/1 is considered one of the rarer German self-propelled guns today. The SSy45 Heavy Platform Wagon was a four-axle German heavy-duty flatbed truck used during World War II for transporting particularly heavy military and civilian goods.
