British Challenger 2 Enhanced Armour

The further development of the Challenger 1 by Vickers Defence Systems led to the Challenger 2 main battle tank, of which the British Army ordered 386 and delivered between 1994 and 2000.
Oman has ordered 18 Challenger 2 main battle tanks. With the introduction of the Challenger 2, all remaining Chieftain and Challenger 1 main battle tanks in the British Army will be phased out.
Although the Challenger 2 is similar to the Challenger 1, it features many improvements, including a brand-new turret armed with the latest 120 mm L30 rifled gun, which fires a new APFSDS-T (Armour Piercing Fin Discarding Sabot Tracer) projectile with a depleted uranium penetrator. The new computerized fire control system, the all-electric weapon control and stabilization system, and the stabilized sights for the commander and gunner ensure a high first-shot hit probability, both day and night. Standard equipment includes a thermal imaging camera above the 120 mm gun, providing a visual display to the gunner and commander, as well as an NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) protection system, attachment points for additional fuel drums at the rear, and attachment points for a combat dozer blade at the front of the hull.
