The VW T3 Transporter was produced from 1979 to 1992 and was the third generation of Volkswagen's successful Transporter series. With its boxy body and rear-mounted engine, it represented the final iteration of the classic Transporter concept. The T3 was available as a panel van, pickup truck, minibus, and camper van and enjoyed great popularity among businesses, families, and travelers alike.

The T3 also saw military use. The German Armed Forces, in particular, employed it in various configurations as a troop carrier, liaison, and transport vehicle. In addition to the standard rear-wheel-drive versions, the more off-road capable Syncro models with all-wheel drive were also used, suitable for driving off paved roads. Furthermore, the T3 was used by other armed forces, police authorities, and aid and rescue organizations. Thanks to its versatility, reliability, and ease of maintenance, the T3 proved its worth in both civilian and military applications and is now considered a cult vehicle in the history of the VW Transporter.
