The Willys MB, better known as the "Jeep," was one of the most versatile vehicles used by the Allies in World War II. In addition to its standard liaison and transport roles, numerous vehicles were converted for special operations. These included versions with additional armor plating to protect the driver and passenger, as well as a heavy .50 caliber (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine gun. Such conversions were particularly used by reconnaissance, security, and special forces units that wanted to combine high mobility with increased firepower. While the additional armor plating offered some protection against gunfire and shrapnel, it could only partially reduce the vulnerability of the light vehicle. Nevertheless, these armed Jeeps proved to be valuable support for rapid advances and reconnaissance missions in many theaters of operation.
