The HEMTT A4 M977A4 (Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck) is the latest variant of the proven HEMTT vehicle family and a key component of the US Army's logistics capabilities. Originally developed by Oshkosh Defense in the early 1980s as a successor to the M520 GOER, the vehicle series has undergone continuous development. With the A4 version, the M977 received a fully modernized cab built to the LTAS (Long Term Armor Strategy) standard; this can be fitted with additional B-kit armor depending on the mission profile, offering significantly improved protection against gunfire, shrapnel, and IEDs.

The M977A4 is an eight-wheel-drive heavy-duty truck with an off-road payload capacity of approximately ten tons. It is powered by a Caterpillar C15 inline-six diesel engine with a displacement of 15.2 liters and an output of 515 hp. Power is transmitted via an Allison 4500SP automatic transmission, featuring permanent all-wheel drive and a central tire inflation system, enabling high mobility even in challenging terrain. The air suspension system improves ride comfort while simultaneously enhancing off-road capability and stability when transporting heavy loads. With a top speed of up to 100 km/h and a range of approximately 480 kilometers, the M977A4 ranks among the most capable military transport vehicles in its class. A material-handling crane mounted at the rear of the vehicle facilitates the loading and unloading of ammunition, supplies, and spare parts without the need for external support.

The M977A4 serves as the base model for an extensive family of vehicles that includes fuel tankers, recovery vehicles, tractor units, bridge transporters, and load-handling systems. Its primary mission is the transport of ammunition, spare parts, supplies, and military equipment directly to the area of ​​operations. Thanks to its excellent off-road mobility, it can reliably supply mechanized units even under challenging conditions, thereby forming an indispensable link between rear-echelon support facilities and combat units. Since deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, the A4 variant, in particular, has proven its worth through improved protection, greater reliability, and enhanced ease of maintenance. Today, the HEMTT A4 remains one of the US Army's key logistics vehicles and is also utilized by the armed forces of several allied nations.
