The all-wheel-drive ZIL-131 is characterized by its reliable construction, excellent off-road capability, and high payload capacity. Although it was first produced in the 1980s, it remains in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces as a versatile platform for various tasks. In combat, some vehicles are retrofitted with heavy small arms or light artillery. A common modification is the mounting of a DShKM machine gun on pedestals or mounts in the cargo bed. This transforms the vehicles into mobile machine gun platforms for fire support or anti-aircraft engagement. The DShKM is a powerful weapon with a wide range of applications. Its muzzle energy reaches 19.2 kJ, and its high rate of fire, combined with its reliability, makes it one of the best weapons in its class. It is also effective against lightly armored vehicles – the B-32 armor-piercing incendiary round penetrates 20 mm of armor at ranges of up to 500 meters. The machine gun uses various types of ammunition: armor-piercing rounds, incendiary rounds, armor-piercing incendiary rounds, tandem rounds, high-explosive rounds, and others.
