The Ward LaFrance Truck Corporation was an American manufacturer of trucks and fire-fighting equipment, founded in 1916 by Addison Ward LaFrance in Elmira Heights, NY. The company ceased operations in 1979.

During World War II, Ward LaFrance supplied more than 5,000 trucks for military service. The 10-ton M1 truck was a heavy-duty recovery vehicle with 6x6 all-wheel drive and a 6-cylinder Continental engine. It was built by both Ward LaFrance and Kenworth between 1941 and 1945, with some minor design differences.

The initial version, the M1, was standardized in July 1941 and featured a closed cab; the later version, the M1A1, produced from 1943, had an open cab with a foldable canvas top. The M1 was produced in five different series (Series 1, Series 2, Series 3, Series 4, and Series 5). Series 2, introduced in 1942, featured a rear winch and some improvements to the crane. A total of 562 Series 2 recovery vehicles were produced.
