In 1969, the Soviet Airborne Forces received a tracked combat vehicle developed on the initiative of Commander V. F. Margelov.
The BMD-1 was capable of crossing water, transporting four men, and engaging various targets with a 73 mm smoothbore cannon, anti-tank missiles, and machine guns.
The use of aluminum armor significantly reduced the vehicle’s weight compared to similar vehicles. A special suspension design allowed the BMD-1 to be transported by aircraft.
A parachute system was provided for airdrops.
