The Chi-Nu was based on the proven chassis of the Type 97 Chi-Ha but featured a newly designed, larger turret housing a powerful 75mm Type 3 gun. This weapon was capable of penetrating the frontal armor of many Allied medium tanks at standard combat ranges and represented a significant improvement over previous Japanese tank guns. The armament was supplemented by two 7.7mm machine guns.
Weighing approximately 18.8 tons, the tank was powered by an air-cooled Mitsubishi V12 diesel engine producing around 240 hp, allowing for a top speed of approximately 39 km/h. The armor was reinforced compared to earlier Japanese vehicles - reaching up to 50 mm on the turret front - yet remained relatively thin when compared to contemporary Allied and German battle tanks. Consequently, the Japanese army continued to prioritize mobility and advantageous firing positions over direct exchanges of fire.
Although the Type 3 Chi-Nu was considered the most modern Japanese mass-produced tank, it never saw combat. All available vehicles were held back on the Japanese home islands to counter an anticipated Allied invasion. Following Japan's surrender in August 1945, the program ended without the tank ever having the opportunity to prove its firepower in actual combat.
For modelers, the Type 3 Chi-Nu ranks among the most interesting Japanese tanks of World War II. Its distinctive features include an angular, welded turret mounting a long 75mm gun, a low silhouette, and a suspension system based on that of the Type 97 Chi-Ha. The late-war paint schemes - typically solid olive green or a three-color camouflage - offer numerous opportunities for subtle weathering and dirt effects, making the Chi-Nu an attractive subject for vehicle models and Pacific theater dioramas.
