The U.S. Compact Loader Type II (M400T) is a military Compact Track Loader (CTL) specifically developed to meet U.S. Army requirements. Based on the civilian CASE 420CT Series 3, the vehicle underwent extensive modifications for military service as part of a long-term procurement program. In 2010, CASE Construction Equipment was awarded a ten-year contract by the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) to supply up to 1,500 M400T track loaders and 1,900 M400W wheeled loaders. The objective was to provide combat engineer and logistics units with a compact, highly mobile work vehicle capable of performing earthworks, obstacle clearance, material handling, and the construction of temporary infrastructure.
Unlike the wheeled M400W, the M400T features a rubber track undercarriage that offers significantly better traction on soft, muddy, or sandy terrain. This makes the vehicle particularly well-suited for operations in challenging environments where wheeled vehicles quickly reach their limits. Its hydrostatic drive system allows for stepless speed control and - typical for compact loaders - steering via differential track speeds, enabling the M400T to turn virtually on the spot. Like its civilian counterpart, it boasts a powerful diesel engine, high lifting capacity, and a universal quick-attach system for a wide range of attachments, including multi-purpose buckets, pallet forks, augers, and hydraulic breakers.
The M400T was equipped with numerous specialized features for military use. Features include a 24-volt military-standard electrical system, NATO slave-start receptacles, reinforced lifting and tie-down points for helicopter transport or airdrops, a weapon mount in the operator's area, and a durable coating for chemical resistance. Furthermore, the fuel system has been modified to allow the engine to run on JP-8 military single-fuel-concept fuel. This standardization significantly simplifies logistics during operations and enhances global operational readiness.
The M400T is utilized by engineer, construction, and supply units for a wide range of tasks. These include clearing debris and obstacles, earthmoving, constructing field fortifications, preparing helicopter landing zones, and loading materials and supplies. Its compact design allows for operation in confined spaces or urban terrain. The combination of high off-road mobility, robust construction, and versatility makes the U.S. Compact Loader Type II (M400T) one of the key light engineer vehicles in the modern U.S. Army and a valuable complement to the wheeled M400W, particularly for operations on challenging terrain.
