The Israeli armed forces used converted battle tanks (often captured vehicles) as armored personnel carriers early on. The modern Namer is based on the chassis of the Merkava IV, but is not a conversion, but a new design. In addition to the 3-man crew, 8 soldiers can be transported. With a remote-controlled weapon station, the crew in the tank can defend themselves using a Bowning M2 machine gun or a Mk 19 grenade launcher.
