Plastic kit for a Bundeswehr Bergepanzer 2A2 / LS
The 2A2/LS version was developed as a modernized variant of the original Bergepanzer 2. As part of the performance upgrade, the vehicle received, among other things, a more powerful drivetrain and technical improvements to handle the increasing weight of modern main battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles. Despite its own weight of over 40 tons, the Bergepanzer possessed excellent off-road mobility and could keep pace with armored units.
Its equipment included a powerful main winch for recovery operations, a hydraulic slewing crane for changing engines or larger components, and a dozer blade at the front of the vehicle. This shield served both for stabilization during heavy lifting and pulling operations and for light earthmoving. The crew typically consisted of four soldiers: a commander, a driver, and two maintenance or recovery specialists.
The armor protected the crew against small arms fire and shrapnel. For self-defense, the vehicle was equipped with a machine gun on the commander's cupola. Unlike main battle tanks, however, the primary function of the recovery vehicle was not firepower, but rather providing technical support to combat troops.
The Bergepanzer 2A2/LS was an indispensable component of the German Army's armored forces for many years. It was deployed with Leopard 1 units as well as other armored units, ensuring that disabled vehicles could be quickly recovered or repaired. With the introduction of newer recovery vehicles based on the Leopard 2, it was gradually replaced, but remains a significant example of German armored support vehicles from the Cold War era and the 1990s.
