Pkw.K1 Kübelwagen Type 155 Half-Track
MENG-VS018
MENG MODEL

The Kübelwagen was developed to meet the needs of the German Wehrmacht as a new, light off-road vehicle suitable for transporting at least three soldiers, a light machine gun, and ammunition. To minimize production costs and accelerate research and development, the design of the vehicle was based on the civilian VW Type 1, the later popular "Beetle." Interestingly, the initial decision was to retain the chassis and rear-wheel drive (4x2) almost unchanged. After field trials, experimental combat deployment during the fighting in Poland in 1939, and numerous minor and major modernizations, production of the Kübelwagen began in 1940 at the VW plants. As a curiosity, the first batch was produced in Stuttgart, but production was very quickly moved to Wolfsburg. The Kübelwagen proved to be an extremely successful vehicle, used by the German army on almost all fronts until the end of World War II – from North Africa to the Eastern Front. The amphibious vehicle Schwimmwagen was developed based on this design.
