In 1946, the Soviet Army introduced the DShKM heavy machine gun – a modernized version of its predecessor, the DShK. This powerful weapon found widespread use, serving both with infantry units and as a mounted weapon on various vehicle types. With a muzzle energy of 19.2 kJ and a high rate of fire, combined with exceptional reliability, it is one of the best weapons in its class. The DShKM proves to be extremely effective against lightly armored vehicles: its B-32 armor-piercing incendiary ammunition can penetrate 20 mm of armor at distances of up to 500 m. The weapon is compatible with various ammunition types, including armor-piercing, incendiary, armor-piercing incendiary, tandem, and high-explosive rounds. Originally developed for air defense, the DShKM was widely used in the 20th century and remains in service with various armed forces to this day. In the Ukrainian Armed Forces, it serves as a heavy infantry weapon, mounted either on special carriages or various pedestals. Firefighting units also use the DShKM in drone defense operations.
