The German paratroopers were officially established as part of the Luftwaffe in early 1936. Before the outbreak of World War II, the airborne troops also became part of the Wehrmacht. Through their well-coordinated combat leadership and the use of Ju-52 transport aircraft, the German paratroopers achieved great success in numerous operations during the early stages of the war. The most important of these was Operation Mercury, in which the island of Crete was captured from May 20 to June 1, 1941. Up to 24,000 paratroopers and 1,200 aircraft participated. In the second half of the war, the German airborne troops were used primarily as regular infantry units to support ground forces. The successful missions of the German paratroopers forced the Allied leadership to reconsider their attitude toward this new branch of the military.
