As automobile emissions regulations became stricter in the 1970s, the scale of 2-stroke engines in the global market began to shrink.

Yamaha began development of a culmination model, determined that it would be the "last 2-stroke."

The "RZ250 (4L3)" was released in 1980 and incorporated the latest technology of the time, including a water-cooled 2-stroke in-line twin engine, Monocross-type rear suspension, and cast wheels.
