The Sovremenny's primary mission was anti-surface warfare and the escort of naval task forces. A particularly distinctive feature was its armament of eight supersonic 3M80 Moskit (SS-N-22 "Sunburn") anti-ship missiles. These were housed in two quadruple launchers, angled outwards, located on either side of the forward superstructure. Capable of speeds around Mach 2.5, the Moskit missile made the Sovremenny a formidable adversary for larger surface vessels.
For air defense, the original Project 956 was equipped with two Uragan air-defense systems carrying a total of 48 guided missiles. These were supplemented by four six-barreled 30mm AK-630 close-in weapon systems (CIWS). The main gun armament consisted of two fully automatic AK-130 twin turrets (130mm), capable of engaging surface and land targets as well as aerial threats.
Anti-submarine warfare capabilities, by contrast, were comparatively limited and primarily designed for self-defense. It was equipped with two RBU-1000 depth-charge launchers and two twin 533 mm torpedo tubes. Additionally, the aft section featured a flight deck with a telescopic hangar for a Kamov Ka-27 "Helix" helicopter.
The destroyer - measuring approximately 156.5 m in length and 17.2 m in beam - was powered by four high-pressure boilers and two steam turbines generating a combined output of around 100,000 hp. Driving two shafts, the ship achieved a speed of approximately 32–33 knots. Its full-load displacement was roughly 7,900–8,000 tonnes, and the crew numbered about 340–350 personnel.
