German Battleship SCHARNHORST (1:350)
TRU05361
TRUMPETER
1:350
She was built by the Wilhelmshaven Naval Shipyard in Germany and commissioned on January 7, 1939.
During sea trials in 1938, insufficient freeboard was discovered at the bow, prompting the Scharnhorst to enter dry dock for bow repairs in 1939.
After the outbreak of World War II, in 1940, the Scharnhorst sank two Royal Navy ships in the North Sea: the aircraft carrier Glorious and two destroyers. However, she was also hit by torpedoes from a British destroyer and subsequently required repairs.
In 1941, the Scharnhorst sailed in the Atlantic and participated in naval operations. During the two-month operation, she sank 22 merchant ships with a total tonnage of 11,500 tons and inflicted considerable damage on Allied shipping.
On December 25, 1943, she attacked an Allied convoy. The Scharnhorst was supposed to attack the British, but was eventually sunk by the Duke of York.
