The Wiesel 1A5 MK weapon carrier is the latest modernization of the Bundeswehr's proven air-transportable tracked vehicle, which is primarily used by paratroopers, infantry, and mountain infantry units. Equipped with its 20 mm MK 20 DM6 A1 automatic cannon, the Wiesel 1A5 MK is suitable for engaging enemy infantry, lightly armored targets, and helicopters at ranges of up to 1,500 meters. The dual-belt feeder enables rapid ammunition changes between armor-piercing and incendiary ammunition.
As part of the service life extension (NDV), a total of 181 vehicles were modernized starting in 2019, including approximately two-thirds of the automatic cannon variant. The improvements include a more powerful thermal imaging system with laser rangefinder (EOPTRIS), improved mine protection using ultra-lightweight composite materials, a camera-based rearview mirror, LED headlights, a new curved driver's hatch, new perimeter mirrors, a new driver's seat belt, additional storage compartments on the vehicle sides, the Panther computer system, and an improved braking system.
The modernizations not only improve the vehicle's protective effectiveness and ergonomics, but also its command and control capabilities and operational flexibility. The first modernized Wiesel 1A5 MKs were delivered to the troops in early 2024 and are expected to remain in service until at least 2030.
