The Elefant 2 heavy-duty transporter represents the Bundeswehr's most modern system for transporting heavy tracked vehicles and was consistently developed to meet the requirements of national and alliance defense, as well as future large-scale NATO deployments. Unlike its predecessor, the SLT 50-3 "Elefant" based on a Faun chassis, the Elefant 2 is based on the robust and powerful MAN HX81 8×8 tractor unit, which is tailored to military heavy-duty transport.
The MAN HX81 features a 680 hp high-torque diesel engine, an automated ZF transmission, and permanent all-wheel drive. The wheelbase, frame reinforcement, and axle loads are specifically designed for the transport of extreme payloads of up to 80 tons. The cabin is armored (integral protection against mines, shelling, and IEDs according to STANAG levels) and air-conditioned, with four seats, modern on-board electronics, and digital vehicle control. Driver assistance systems, rearview cameras, and a modern diagnostic system support the crew.
The HX81 tractor unit on the Elefant 2 is coupled to the newly developed 8-axle low-loader semi-trailer from DOLL, which was specially designed for the safe transport of even the heaviest combat vehicles such as the Leopard 2A7V, PzH 2000, or the Bergepanzer 3 (Armored Recovery Vehicle). The low-loader offers a maximum payload of up to 80 tons, a hydraulically lowering loading bed, reinforced lanes, numerous lashing points, and foldable loading and unloading ramps. The eight axles are individually steerable and feature electronically controlled forced steering for maximum maneuverability despite the vehicle's length.
The loading bed is modular and features integrated sensors, electronic level control, and CAN bus-controlled control elements. Autonomous power supply units and modern braking systems (EBS, ABS, retarder) are also part of the system. The low loader is optionally equipped with its own remote control for shunting movements in the unloading area.
