The CH-53GA is the modernized main variant of the CH-53G heavy transport helicopter, which has been in service with the German Armed Forces since the 1970s. The "GA" (basic overhaul and equipment) version was developed as part of a comprehensive modernization program to ensure the model's operational capability until its planned replacement by the CH-47F Chinook. A total of 40 aircraft were completely overhauled and equipped with modern avionics and expanded capabilities.
The CH-53GA is based on the original CH-53G fuselage, but features a glass cockpit with digital multifunction displays, a new navigation system, an autopilot, satellite-based communications (SatCom), and a modernized self-protection system (including radar and laser warning sensors and decoy launchers). Of particular note is the increased range thanks to the installation of external auxiliary fuel tanks, which now enable missions of up to 1,200 km without refueling.
With a payload of up to 7.5 tons, the CH-53GA can transport vehicles, cargo, or up to 38 fully equipped soldiers. It is suitable for tactical airlift missions, deployments, and humanitarian aid. Thanks to its night vision-capable equipment and new electronics, it can be deployed even in adverse conditions and integrated into multinational operations—such as in Afghanistan or Mali.
