The Battle of Arnhem, which began with the airdrop of British and Polish paratroopers, took place from September 17 to 26, 1944. Part of Operation Market Garden, this famous battle aimed to capture the Arnhem bridge over the Lower Rhine in the Netherlands. The successful seizure of a series of bridges—with the Arnhem bridge as the primary objective—was intended to pave the way for an Allied advance into Germany itself. Unfortunately for the Allies, German defenders put up fierce resistance and hastily rushed reinforcements to the area, ultimately causing the airborne assault to fail. In the end, it was a victory for German forces, even though the Allies did establish a bridgehead in the Netherlands that they could utilize later.
Dragon's latest 1:35 scale figure set depicts four German soldiers participating in the Battle of Arnhem. The four figures were sculpted with precision and rich detail by the renowned Japanese sculptor Yoshitaka Hirano to achieve a high level of realism; straight out of the box, they form a cohesive vignette. Two wounded tank crewmen, having survived the destruction of their vehicle at the hands of British paratroopers, are shown supporting each other as they make their way to a casualty collection point. These bandaged figures are designed to pair together in this realistic pose. They are assisted by two Panzergrenadiers—members of one of the units deployed to Arnhem to halt the British advance. These two figures also impress with their poses, proportions, and attention to detail; one of the soldiers is offering a cigarette to the wounded men. While the four figures are ideally suited for a scene depicting the desperate fighting around Arnhem, they are versatile enough to be used in other scenarios or on other battlefields, depending on the modeler's preference.
