he Messerschmitt Me 163A was the first rocket-powered aircraft in the world to be produced in large numbers.
The production aircraft were used both for testing and for training the pilots who would later fly the real fighter version, the Me 163B.
On 2 October 1941, German pilot Heini Dittmar became the first person to exceed a speed of 1000 km/h in the Me 163A V1 (he actually reached 1003.67 km/h). The rocket-powered comet took off with a two-wheeled, jettisonable dolly and landed on a skid located under the lower fuselage.
