The production aircraft were used both for testing and for training the pilots who would later fly the real fighter version, the Me 163B.
On 2 October 1941, German pilot Heini Dittmar became the first person to exceed a speed of 1000 km/h in the Me 163A V1 (he actually reached 1003.67 km/h). The rocket-powered comet took off with a two-wheeled, jettisonable dolly and landed on a skid located under the lower fuselage.
