Ilyushin IL-2M3 Attack Aircraft

The Ilyushin Il-2 "Shturmovik" was a Soviet ground-attack aircraft of World War II. It was designed as an armored aircraft for low-level close air support, capable of engaging enemy tanks and other ground targets. The maiden flight of the TsKB-57 prototype took place on October 12, 1940; serial production began in March 1941, and the aircraft entered service in May. A total of 36,163 units were built. The "Shturmovik" played a crucial role on the Eastern Front and was known by nicknames such as "Black Death."
