The Convair F-106 Delta Dart was in service with the U.S. Air Force from the 1960s to the 1980s and was considered one of the best interceptors in the history of the U.S. Air Force.
It served as the primary all-weather interceptor of the Air Force and the Air National Guard for more than 29 years.
It was the primary "dance partner" of the Russian Tu-95 Bear tactical bombers.
The Delta Dart was developed from the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger.
The more powerful Pratt & Whiteny J-75P-17 engine enabled the aircraft to reach higher speeds, up to Mach 2.
The use of the new, larger engine resulted in a larger aircraft.
The underfuselage weapons bay could carry four AIM-4 Falcon missiles and one Air-2 missile.
The F-106 made its maiden flight on December 26, 1956, and entered service in June 1959.
