Although the Republic F-105 was armed with missiles and an internal cannon, its design was specifically optimized for high-speed, low-altitude penetration missions carrying a single nuclear bomb in its internal weapons bay.
The Thunderchief made its maiden flight in 1955 and entered service in 1958.
As the largest single-engine fighter aircraft ever operated by the USAF, the single-seat F-105 could carry a heavier load of conventional bombs ("iron bombs") than the four-engine strategic bombers of World War II, which had ten-man crews.
The F-105 became best known as the primary fighter-bomber used in missions over North Vietnam during the early stages of the Vietnam War.
