Its maiden flight took place on December 21, 1970. From 1974 to 2006, the F-14 served the US Navy as its primary sea superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor, and tactical reconnaissance platform.
After the integration of the LANTIRN (Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night) system, it also conducted precision attack missions.
The F-14 was developed after the failure of the F-111B project and was the first of the American "Teen Series" fighters, whose design was based on experience gained from air combat against MiG fighters in the Vietnam War.
The F-14 was first deployed to the US Navy in 1974 aboard the USS Enterprise, replacing the F-4 Phantom II. The first twelve F-14As were prototypes (sometimes called YF-14As).
During its later service, its armament was enhanced with precision-guided weapons.
The US Navy received 478 F-14As, 79 of which were delivered to Iran.
The last 102 F-14As were delivered with improved TF30-P-414A engines.
An additional 80th F-14A was manufactured for Iran but delivered to the US Navy.
