As early as April 1939, Messerschmitt began project work on a new high-speed fighter with a turbojet engine.
On July 18, 1942, the Me 262 took off on its maiden flight.
Powered by two Jumo 004B engines, it reached a top speed of 870 km/h and a cruising altitude of 6,000 m. Its service ceiling was 11,400 m and its range was 1,050 km.
The standard armament consisted of four 30 mm MK 108 cannons in the nose. Additionally, twelve R4M rockets could be carried on the wings.
