The aircraft flown by Private Werner Merz operated within the typical operational profile of JG 54 towards the end of the war: defensive flights over the Reich, often under difficult conditions such as fuel shortages and Allied air superiority. However, little is known about specific individual markings or particular aerial victories, which is typical for many lower-ranking pilots during this late phase.
Lieutenant Theo Nibel, on the other hand, was among the more experienced officers whose Fw 190 D-9s were also used in interception and fighter escort missions. His missions reflect the tactical role of the "Dora": rapid response to Allied bomber formations and providing their escort. Overall, these examples demonstrate how, although the Fw 190 D-9 was technically capable within JG 54, its deployment was severely limited by Germany's strategic situation.
