It entered Luftwaffe service in 1940 and was produced until mid-1944.
A total of 845 production aircraft were built.
The FW 189A-1 version had a defensive armament of two MG 15 machine guns.
In the A2, the MG 15 were replaced by the double-barreled MG 81Z in caliber 7.92 mm.
It was used extensively and with great success on the Eastern Front.
Its Russian nickname was "Rama" (frame), referring to the distinctive shape of its tail boom.
