The F8F Bearcat was the last piston-engined carrier-based fighter developed by Grumman.
In November 1943, two prototypes of the XF8F-1 were ordered, the first of which made its maiden flight on August 21, 1944.
Grumman again opted for the most powerful engine available at the time, the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp – the same engine that powered the Hellcat and Tigercat models.
This time, the engine was fitted into the smallest and lightest airframe that could be built.
The result was an extremely maneuverable, fast aircraft with a 30% higher rate of climb than the Hellcat.
