Although the Lancashire-based English Electric Company had gained extensive experience in aircraft construction during World War II, it had never designed its own aircraft before. Therefore, when it entered the competition to develop a successor to the famous de Havilland Mosquito, hardly anyone expected it to succeed. With a young and talented design team, they developed one of the most important aircraft in British aviation history: a twin-engine bomber designed for speed thanks to its aerodynamic design.

The aircraft's potential was obvious from the outset and impressed the Air Ministry so much that it pre-ordered 132 aircraft, convinced that this new jet would give the Royal Air Force a technological edge.
