The night fighter version of the Hellcat entered service in late November 1943.
The U.S. Navy needed a night fighter to counter Japanese night attacks on surface ships.
The F6F proved to be the only viable option, as the F4U was unsuitable for night landings on movable decks.
Grumman modified the F6F-3 here and there and developed the F6F-3N.
Approximately 200 F6F-3Ns were produced.
The F6F-3N's starboard wing radar antenna carried the AN/APS-6 radar, the receiving radio equipment was housed in the fuselage, and the radar screen was located centrally in the instrument panel.
The F6F-3N retained the P&W R2800-10W engine.
