The Avro 504K was one of the best-known and most successful British aircraft of the First World War. It was developed by A.V. Roe and Company (Avro), whose designer, Alliot Verdon Roe, was already a pioneer of British aviation before the war. The original Avro 504 made its maiden flight in 1913 and quickly became one of the most produced aircraft of its time.

The 504K version appeared in 1917 and was the most significant and widespread variant of the series. It was designed as a two-seat biplane with an open cockpit and was characterized by its simple, robust construction and docile flight characteristics. A distinctive feature of the 504K was its universal engine mount, which allowed for the installation of various engine types. This enabled production to continue even during periods of engine shortage, contributing significantly to its success.

During the First World War, the Avro 504 was initially used for reconnaissance and light bombing missions. It carried out attacks on German targets in the early months of the war, making it one of the earliest combat aircraft of the British Air Force. However, with the rapid technological advancements in aerial warfare, it was soon superseded by more modern fighter aircraft.

The Avro 504K's greatest importance, therefore, lay in its role as a trainer. Thousands of aspiring pilots of the British Royal Flying Corps and later the Royal Air Force received their basic flight training on this aircraft. Thanks to its stable flight characteristics and reliability, it was ideally suited for pilot training and remained in service well beyond the end of the war.

The Avro 504K was powered by various rotary or inline engines, depending on availability, with outputs ranging from approximately 80 to 130 hp. Its top speed was around 145 km/h, while its range was about 400 kilometers. The crew consisted of a flight instructor and student, or a pilot and observer.

After the end of the First World War, the Avro 504K was exported to numerous countries and widely built under license. It saw service with both military and civilian operators and contributed significantly to the development of aviation in many nations. In total, more than 8,000 Avro 504 variants were produced, making it one of the most produced aircraft of its era.

Today, the Avro 504K is considered one of the most important training aircraft in aviation history. It trained an entire generation of pilots and played a crucial role in the development of military and civilian aviation during and after the First World War. Its distinctive appearance, with large wings, open cockpit and classic wood and fabric construction, makes it a symbol of early aviation to this day.
