The A-4 Skyhawk was developed by Douglas in response to the US Navy's requirement for a jet-powered fighter aircraft to replace the aging A-1 Skyraider. Douglas opted for a design that minimized size, weight, and complexity. The result was an aircraft that weighed only half the weight specified by the Navy. The wings were so compact that they did not need to be folded for storage on a carrier.
