The Morane Saulnier MS.406 was introduced in 1934, and the first prototype flew on August 8, 1935.
It was powered by a Hispano Suiza HS 12Ygrs engine; the next prototype, built in 1937, had an HS 12Ycrs engine.
The first production airframes were not built until early 1939.
