Mustangs served in nearly every active theater of operations, including the Pacific, where they escorted B-29 bombers from Iwo Jima, Japan. Between 1941 and 1945, the US Army Air Force ordered 14,855 Mustangs (including the A-36A dive bomber and the F-6 photo-reconnaissance variant), of which 7,956 were P-51Ds with the characteristic "bubble" canopy and heavier armament. The P-51D served as an interceptor and primarily in ground support.
P-51 aircraft remained in service with reserve and National Guard units until 1957.
