Mountain infantry units (Gebirgsjäger) emerged as independent military formations in Europe at the beginning of World War I. Hitler's Germany actively built mountain infantry troops and established the 1st Edelweiss Mountain Infantry Division in 1938. During World War II, German mountain infantry participated in numerous operations and operated on various fronts. Mountain infantry units were involved in fighting in Norway in 1940, in the Balkans and Crete in 1941, and in the Italian campaign of 1943–1945. Despite initial successes and intensive training of the mountain infantry, the Battle of the Caucasus ended in defeat for the Wehrmacht.
