The tank was a death trap in Finland's rugged terrain; it also performed poorly during the early stages of World War II, and large numbers fell into German hands during Operation Barbarossa.
After 1941, the T-38 saw little direct combat and was primarily used for other tasks, such as an artillery prime mover—though reports indicate that some units were still employed during the crossing of the Dnieper in 1943. The Red Army's most important amphibious scout vehicle during World War II was the Ford GPA (an amphibious Jeep), an open, unarmored vehicle supplied under the Lend-Lease Act.
