M1070 Gun Truck

In the so-called "gun truck", an armored structure with rotating ring mounts for heavy machine guns or grenade launchers was built instead of the fifth wheel. In German, this type of vehicle can be called an "improvised security vehicle" or escort vehicle.
The basis of this security vehicle is the M1070 HET (Heavy Equipment Transporter) tractor with the 8x8 drive formula. It has an electronic engine control system to be able to bring the maximum engine power to the ground in every situation. In addition, the chassis is equipped with adjustable air suspension to ensure ground contact in any terrain and to reduce the heavy shocks when driving off-road and thus protect the load. The engine produces 500 hp and transfers this to the wheels via an automatic transmission.
During operations in Iraq, it became apparent that the American supply convoys were very vulnerable to attacks by Iraqi insurgents. This required a quick conversion/improvement of the M1070 tractors into armed escort vehicles that would accompany these convoys from then on.
The conversion included, among other things, the installation of the "Heavy Equipment Transporter Urban Survivability Kit (HUSK), additional armor for the driver's cab with additional underbody protection and fire extinguishing system.
An armored box was attached in the area of ​​the fifth wheel plate, which had two rotating ring mounts for the armament.
