The Autocannone 3Ro equipped with the 90mm anti-aircraft gun (Cannone da 90/53) was an Italian self-propelled gun vehicle from World War II. It featured the powerful Cannone da 90/53—originally designed as an anti-aircraft gun—mounted on the chassis of the Lancia 3Ro heavy truck. This combination was created to provide a mobile platform capable of engaging both aircraft and armored ground targets.
The 90/53 was considered one of the best Italian gun designs of its era; it possessed high penetrating power, making it effective even against heavy Allied tanks. However, due to its open-top design, the crew had very little protection. These vehicles were primarily deployed in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, where they served in both anti-aircraft and tank-destroyer roles.
Although relatively few vehicles were built, the Autocannone 3Ro 90/53 earned an excellent reputation for its high firepower and versatility. Today, it is regarded as one of the most interesting Italian military vehicles of World War II and an early example of successfully combining a heavy gun with a mobile carrier platform.
3Ro 90/53 Ammunition Truck
The 3Ro 90/53 ammunition truck served as the support vehicle for the Italian *Autocannone* 3Ro mounting the 90mm 90/53 gun. It was based on the rugged Lancia 3Ro, one of the Italian armed forces' most important trucks during World War II. Its primary mission was to transport ammunition, spare parts, equipment, and the operating crew for the 90/53 anti-aircraft gun.
Since the gun vehicle itself could carry only a limited number of shells, the ammunition truck was an indispensable component of the unit. Projectiles were carried in special racks on its cargo bed to ensure the rapid resupply of the gun during combat operations. The gun vehicle and the ammunition truck frequently operated together as a tactical unit.
The 3Ro ammunition truck was deployed in the same theaters of war as the 90/53 self-propelled guns, including North Africa, Sicily, and the Italian mainland. Through its vital logistical role, it contributed significantly to maintaining the 90/53 gun's high firepower over extended periods of combat. Today, it is best known as the characteristic support vehicle for one of Italy's most famous weapon systems of World War II.
