The Merkava is a main battle tank used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Development of the tank began in 1973, and it entered active service in 1978.
Four main versions of the tank have been deployed. It saw its first major combat use during the 1982 Lebanon War. The name "Merkava" is derived from the designation of the IDF's original development program.
It is designed for rapid battle-damage repair, high survivability, cost-effectiveness, and off-road mobility. Similar to modern self-propelled guns, the turret is positioned further back than on most other main battle tanks. This provides additional protection against frontal attacks. Furthermore, this layout creates more space in the rear of the tank for increased cargo capacity and access to the main crew compartment, allowing for easy entry and exit even under enemy fire. This enables the tank to serve as a platform for casualty evacuation, a forward command post, and an armored personnel carrier. The twin rear doors provide overhead protection during the loading and unloading of equipment and personnel.
