The Pz.kpfw VI Tiger II Ausf. B “Königtiger” was the most powerful main battle tank of the Second World War. By the end of the war, the Allies had nothing that could effectively combat it. The Tiger II combined a powerful and effective gun with armor that was virtually impenetrable to Allied tanks and anti-tank guns. Planning for the Tiger II began in May 1941, a year before the Tiger I went into production. In the fall of 1942/January 1943, designers began work on a new heavy tank that would eventually replace the Tiger I. In January 1943, Hitler ordered the new Tiger to be equipped with a long 88 mm cannon as well as 150 mm front armor and 80 mm side armor.
