The medium M4 series used several types of engines. The Ford GAA engine version was called the M4A3. The M4A3 that was most commonly seen on the battlefield had a hull with revised 47-degree frontal armor and two larger hatches compared to the old hull. During production, changes were also made to use a turret with a raised rear. The armor on the right side of the turret was reinforced in the casting process to compensate for the thinner internal armor required to mount the weapon equipment. So the turret no longer had any additional additional armor.
