German tank commanders, who typically deployed in a ratio of one Firefly to four standard Shermans, soon learned to look for the Firefly's longer barrel and try to take out these tanks first.
To make identification more difficult, British crews camouflaged the front of their guns with bright paint, making their tank look like a Sherman equipped with standard 75 mm cannons.
They hoped this deception would buy them enough time to fire the first shot in an engagement.
